UNDERTALE / SOUL COLORS

Undertale SOULs: the seven colors and what they mean.

The seven familiar Undertale SOUL colors are red, cyan, orange, blue, purple, green, and yellow. These heart-shaped SOULs connect story lore, six named traits, and battle mechanics—but those meanings are not interchangeable.

What are SOULs in Undertale, and why are they hearts?

A SOUL represents a being's essence in Undertale. The heart you move around the battle box is the player character's SOUL. It normally appears red; particular encounters change its color and movement rules.

Human SOULs appear as colored hearts pointing downward. Monster SOULs are white hearts pointing upward. The seven-color chart below describes human SOUL colors, not seven kinds of monster. See human versus monster SOULs for the story rules, with spoilers marked.

The third column belongs to this site. Matching six labels does not make the assessment an official Undertale personality system.

Light blue and cyan refer to the same color in this chart: Patience. The darker blue corresponds to Integrity. Red is included among the seven colors even though its trait is not explicitly named like the other six.

What Undertale explicitly establishes

The Snowdin Ball Game connects colored results with different styles of play. Its red-flag result gathers six qualities together: Bravery, Justice, Integrity, Kindness, Perseverance, and Patience. Items associated with the six collected human SOULs reinforce the same color groupings.

Red is handled differently. A later red result emphasizes continuing to be yourself, but it does not supply a seventh trait name in the same format. Calling the red trait “Determination” therefore goes beyond the explicit list.

Read why red and Determination need to be distinguished.

A color can describe more than one game system

SOUL colors, colored attacks, item sets, Ball Game results, and battle modes overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Blue, green, purple, and yellow change how the player moves or acts in certain battles. Orange and light blue mainly appear as attack-color rules in Undertale rather than full player SOUL modes.

Compare the SOUL modes and colored-attack rules.

Which Undertale characters have the seven SOULs?

The player character has a red SOUL. The six other colors belong to the earlier humans whose SOULs appear in the story; the original game does not give those six humans individual names. A monster changing the player's SOUL color during a fight does not mean that monster owns a human SOUL of that color.

Why do some guides mention eight humans but seven colors?

The count of humans and the count of colors answer different questions. The story includes the first fallen human, six later humans, and the protagonist. That does not establish eight distinct SOUL colors.

Named characters from fan works need a separate label. For example, Undertale Yellow's Clover is a fan-created interpretation of the yellow SOUL, not an identity supplied by the original Undertale.

Where Soul Virtues interpretation begins

This project keeps all seven colors but treats them as seven independent behavioral signals. Red maps to Determination so the assessment can ask about choosing and renewing direction. That is an original framework decision, not a correction to Undertale canon.

A result can contain every signal at once. It does not claim that a player permanently “is” one canon SOUL color.

Which Undertale SOUL color are you?

Knowing the color meanings is different from taking a personality quiz. Our independent 66-question test uses the seven colors as a framework for reflecting on everyday choices. Your answers produce a leading signal; they do not identify an official in-game SOUL.

Sources and source boundaries

Start with the official Undertale website. The community-maintained Undertale Wiki pages for SOULs, the Ball Game, and the eight humans organize the relevant in-game text, colors, and item associations. Those references contain more story spoilers than this overview.

Community documentation helps locate and compare game material; it is not itself an additional layer of canon.
