UNDERTALE / BATTLE MECHANICS
SOUL colors can change the rules of a battle.
A SOUL mode changes how the heart moves or acts inside the battle box. Those mechanical roles are memorable, but they are not an official personality test.

This guide names several encounters and explains their central battle mechanics. It avoids route endings and major story outcomes.
The five main Undertale SOUL modes
| Color | Battle behavior | Representative encounter |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Normal mode with free movement inside the battle box. | The default across most encounters. |
| Blue | Gravity and jumping replace unrestricted movement. | Papyrus and Sans. |
| Green | The SOUL stays in place and turns a shield to block incoming arrows. | Undyne. |
| Purple | Movement is constrained to horizontal lines that form a web-like field. | Muffet. |
| Yellow | The SOUL can shoot to interact with attacks and targets. | Mettaton encounters. |
Orange and light blue are different in Undertale
Orange and light-blue attacks create movement rules for avoiding damage: orange rewards movement, while light blue rewards staying still. In Undertale, they are colored attack types rather than complete SOUL modes that replace the player's controls for an encounter.
That is why “seven colors” does not mean “seven playable battle modes.” A color may connect to a trait, an item set, an attack rule, a SOUL mode, or several of those at once.
The Switch split-color exception
The Nintendo Switch version adds a special blue/red split mode for the Mad Mew Mew encounter. It is built around the console's two analog sticks and Joy-Con color pairing, so it should not be treated as an eighth personality trait or a missing human SOUL category.
Mechanics can suggest themes without defining a person
Shielding can evoke protection, jumping can evoke constraint and adaptation, and shooting can evoke precision. Those associations can inspire fan interpretation, but the mechanic itself does not establish a player's personality.
