What does the Big Five personality test measure?

The Big Five describes five broad dimensions of personality rather than assigning everyone to a single type. Your profile can combine a quieter social style with curiosity, or strong organization with an accommodating approach to others. There is no overall personality score and no dimension you need to maximize.

This questionnaire uses the five 10-item IPIP Big-Five Factor Marker scales, for a total of 50 statements. The wording is public domain. The Intellect or Imagination scale is displayed here as Openness / Intellect; the Emotional Stability scale is inverted to display Neuroticism / Emotional Reactivity in OCEAN order.

The five OCEAN traits

Openness / Intellect

Interest in ideas, imagination, and abstract thinking. These items emphasize the intellect and imagination side of Openness.

Conscientiousness

Organization, preparation, and follow-through in everyday responsibilities.

Extraversion

Social engagement, conversational initiative, and comfort with attention.

Agreeableness

Concern for others, sympathy, and an accommodating interpersonal approach.

Neuroticism / Emotional Reactivity

How readily worry, irritation, and changes in mood appear in your self-description.

How to get a useful result

Read each statement as beginning with “I” and answer for your typical behavior. Try to think across ordinary situations rather than one unusually good or bad day. There are no correct responses. Some statements describe opposite directions of the same trait, so changing every answer to the highest number will not simply create a high profile.

You can go back during the quiz, resume in this browser, and review every answer after finishing. If a phrase does not fit you perfectly, choose the closest of the five responses. “Neither inaccurate nor accurate” is a valid middle response, not a missing answer.

How are Big Five scores calculated?

Responses range from 1 to 5. Reverse-keyed items use 6 minus the selected value. Each trait has ten statements and a keyed total from 10 to 50. Its displayed position is (total − 10) ÷ 40 × 100, rounded to a whole number. A total of 30 is therefore 50/100.

For Neuroticism, we invert all ten published Emotional Stability keys before calculating that total. A more relaxed self-description therefore lowers the Neuroticism score. We do not use a reference-population dataset, so 80/100 does not mean “higher than 80% of people.” Read the scoring examples and full Big Five guide.

How accurate is a free Big Five test?

The published IPIP scales provide a documented starting point. This site's presentation, reading bands, and reflection suggestions have not undergone a separate validation study. A short self-report profile depends on what you notice about yourself, how you interpret the statements, and your current context. Read it as a starting point for reflection rather than a diagnosis or a hiring decision.

The five marker scales provide broad scores. They do not produce the six detailed facets per trait used by longer IPIP-NEO questionnaires. Openness / Intellect is also not an IQ test. A lower score on any scale should not be treated as a defect.

Your answers and your share card

The questionnaire scores your answers in the browser. Progress and a completed result are stored locally when browser storage is available. No account or delivery email is needed, and individual answers are not uploaded. A downloaded or shared card contains all five derived scores and the test address. Anyone you send it to can read those scores.
