UNDERTALE / CHARACTER GUIDE
Undertale characters: who’s who in the Underground.
Frisk, Flowey, Toriel, Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys, Mettaton, and Asgore form the main cast you meet along the journey. This guide explains their roles, separates human and monster SOULs, and marks the later-story names below.
Spoiler note: character names, locations, and basic roles appear here. Later-story identities are in a closed section; linked character references can contain ending spoilers. This is a main-cast guide, not a list of every enemy or NPC.
The main Undertale characters at a glance
| Character | Role in Undertale | Where they fit |
|---|---|---|
| Frisk Human | The playable protagonist, whose journey through the Underground is shaped by your choices. | The human you guide |
| Flowey Talking flower | An early encounter who introduces the SOUL and presents a very particular view of how this world works. | The opening of the Ruins |
| Toriel Monster | The caretaker of the Ruins. She helps the human through puzzles and tries to keep them safe. | The Ruins and her home |
| Sans Skeleton monster | Papyrus's brother, known for jokes and a relaxed manner. His role changes with the path you take. | Snowdin and later encounters |
| Papyrus Skeleton monster | Sans's brother, an enthusiastic puzzle-maker who wants to join the Royal Guard. | Snowdin's puzzles |
| Undyne Monster | The head of the Royal Guard, who pursues the human through Waterfall. | Waterfall |
| Alphys Monster | The Royal Scientist, whose work and attempts to guide the human become central in Hotland. | The laboratory in Hotland |
| Mettaton Robot with a SOUL | A performer with a body built by Alphys. His encounters turn the human's journey into a series of shows. | The laboratory and Hotland |
| Asgore Monster | The king of the Underground. His decisions connect the human's journey to the Barrier and the collected human SOULs. | New Home |
Undertale lets you respond to encounters through actions beyond fighting. A character's appearance in a battle does not by itself tell you that killing them is the only way forward. Your decisions affect relationships and the route through the story.
Asriel, Chara, and the earlier humans
Show story context for these names
Asriel Dreemurr
Asriel is the son of Toriel and Asgore. His place in the family's history matters to the larger story; a full explanation reaches into major late-game revelations.
Chara and Frisk are different characters
Chara refers to the first fallen human, the character you name at the beginning. Frisk is the playable protagonist. The distinction is part of the story, so treating both names as interchangeable makes character explanations misleading.
The six other human SOULs
The six collected human SOULs belonged to other humans whose individual names are not supplied in the original game. Named versions of those humans in fan stories or games should be credited to those works.
Which Undertale character has which SOUL color?
The seven human SOUL colors are not an official personality chart for the cast. Frisk's SOUL normally appears red. Monsters have their own SOUL rules; assigning Sans to blue or Undyne to green as their personal human SOUL color confuses battle mechanics with identity.
For example, a fight can turn the player's SOUL blue or green and change how it moves or defends. The color belongs to the player's battle mode at that moment. It does not establish a corresponding human SOUL inside the opponent.

Common questions about Undertale characters
Are Sans and Papyrus human?
No. They are skeleton monsters and brothers. Their human-like shape does not put them among the fallen humans.
Is Clover an original Undertale character?
Clover is the protagonist of Undertale Yellow, a fan-made prequel. The original Undertale includes the yellow human SOUL, but does not provide Clover's name and story.
Does everyone meet the same version of each character?
Your choices can change encounters and relationships. If two descriptions seem incompatible, check whether they discuss different Undertale routes, a fan-made alternate universe, or another game.
Does liking a character tell me my SOUL color?
No official rule connects a favorite character to a reader's personality. You might like a character's humor, design, or story without sharing their behavior. A fan quiz is a separate interpretation.
