PERSONALITY EXPLAINED
Explore six HEXACO dimensions.
You can enjoy company and still dislike attention. You can care about people and still stand your ground. A dimensional personality profile gives those combinations room to exist.
What is a HEXACO personality test?
HEXACO is a way of organizing personality into six broad dimensions. Instead of selecting one winning character, a questionnaire gives a separate score for each dimension. The interest is in the whole profile: a quality that stands out, one that is quieter, and the situations where both make sense.
Personality Play, our separate test site, now offers a free HEXACO-inspired experience. It is an independent beta with 72 statements selected and adapted from public-domain IPIP material. Its core result is free and does not require an account. It is not the official HEXACO-PI-R assessment.
Meet the six dimensions
H — Honesty–Humility
Think about how you respond to an advantage no one would notice, a chance to impress, or an unequal exchange. This dimension brings together straightforward dealing, attitudes to status, and modest self-presentation. A score is a prompt to examine choices, not a certificate that someone is trustworthy.
E — Emotionality
Consider uncertainty, vulnerability, emotional connection, and the support you seek. Someone might feel deeply affected by a difficult situation while appearing composed on the outside. Read the examples rather than treating emotionality as a measure of strength or mental health.
X — Extraversion
How readily do you approach a group, express yourself, or bring energy to an interaction? A preference for quieter settings can coexist with close relationships and confident skills. The useful question is which situations draw you in.
A — Agreeableness
Notice what happens during friction: criticism, an apology, or a plan that goes wrong. Patience, forgiveness, and willingness to accommodate can look different when you are rested, rushed, or protecting an important boundary.
C — Conscientiousness
Look at how you organize, sustain effort, handle details, and think ahead. A carefully planned workday and an improvised weekend need not contradict each other. The result can help you notice where structure supports you and where it becomes a burden.
O — Openness to Experience
What draws your curiosity: an unfamiliar idea, a piece of art, an imaginative possibility, or an unconventional approach? Openness invites reflection on the kinds of novelty you enjoy. It is not an intelligence ranking.
Why try it?
Try the test when one personality label feels too narrow. Perhaps you are interested in ideas but prefer familiar social settings, or you are considerate without readily forgiving a broken promise. Separate dimensions give you more useful questions than “Which single type am I?”
Readers of our Integrity or Kindness guides may find the different perspective interesting. But familiar words do not make the tests equivalent: the questions, scales, and frameworks are different, so a Soul Virtues score cannot be converted into a HEXACO score.
How to get something useful from the result
Answer for your usual behavior, rather than the person you hope to be or one unusually good day. Afterward, choose a dimension and recall one example that fits and one that does not. That second example is useful: it shows where context matters.
A displayed 0–100 scale is not a population percentile. A higher score is not automatically a better score, and there is no total personality grade. If you compare with a friend, discuss examples instead of deciding who scored “best.”
Know which questionnaire you are taking
Personality Play’s 72-item selection has not undergone empirical validation as a complete questionnaire. Its result is intended for self-reflection, not diagnosis, hiring, or judging a relationship. You can read its source choices and scoring before starting.
