UNDERTALE / SOUL LORE

Human and monster SOULs follow different story rules.

Both humans and monsters have SOULs in Undertale. Their differences involve strength, relation to the body, persistence after death, absorption, and the magic of the Barrier.

The central differences

RuleHuman SOULsMonster SOULs
Relative powerFar stronger; one human SOUL is comparable to nearly all monster SOULs together.Individually much weaker.
After deathCan remain stable outside the body.Normally disappears almost immediately.
Body relationshipHumans are primarily physical, with the SOUL housed in the body.Monster bodies are largely magical and closely attuned to their SOULs.
Typical appearanceColored hearts that usually point downward.White hearts that point upward.
ExceptionPersistence is the defining story difference.A Boss Monster SOUL can remain briefly after death before shattering.

Why persistence matters

Determination helps explain why human SOULs can persist after the body dies. Monster SOULs normally cannot maintain that form. Boss Monsters are a narrow exception: their SOULs remain only briefly, creating a small window before they break.

This difference drives several major plans and conflicts in the story. It also means “monsters do not have SOULs” is incorrect; they have SOULs governed by different rules.

The Barrier and absorption rules

A human SOUL and a monster SOUL together provide the power needed for a being to cross the Barrier. Seven human SOULs can break it entirely. The game also establishes restrictions around like absorbing like: humans cannot absorb human SOULs, and monsters cannot absorb monster SOULs.

These are fictional world rules, not metaphors used by the Soul Virtues scoring system.

What the personality test does not infer

The assessment uses seven colors as a presentation layer for seven behavioral score groups. It does not determine whether someone has a “human” or “monster” SOUL, predict magical power, or convert story lore into psychological evidence.
